CSU slips in back nine, sits in seventh after 36 holes of Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Colorado State struggled on the back nine in its second round Tuesday afternoon and fell to seventh after 36 holes of the 73rd Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf. The three-day, 54-hole event, hosted by San Jose State and televised on Golf Channel, is being played at Pasatiempo Golf Club (Par 70 – 6, 615 yards) in Santa Cruz, Calif.
In the unique play-six, count-five format, the No. 46 Rams were in good position after the first nine holes at even par on the counting scores, but struggled as the winds picked up and gusted later in the afternoon, finishing at 13-over 363 for the day and 16-over 716. Host San Jose State leads at 1-under 699, one shot ahead of No. 16 Stanford at even-par 700, as the Cardinal were the only under-par team on the day. No. 11 California and No. 6 Southern Cal are tied for third at 5-over 705, with No. 39 Oregon and No. 19 Pepperdine tied for fifth at 7-over 707.
Individually, CSU is led by junior AJ Ott, who shot a 1-under 69 and is tied for 15th at 1-over 141 for the tournament. Ott had three birdies and two bogeys on the day, including a stellar birdie on the par-3 18th, the third-hardest hole in the tournament, hitting his tee shot within three feet. Senior Jake Staiano and sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri each shot a 3-over 73 on the day and are tied for 19th at 2-over 142. Freshman Oscar Teiffel is next in a tie for 50th at 7-over 147, while freshman Davis Bryant is tied for 62nd at 10-over 150. Stanford's Isaiah Salinda, ranked 68th nationally, is the 36-hole leader at 8-under 132, three shots ahead of four players at 5-over 135.

The Rams will go off in the first wave off No. 1 Wednesday morning in the final round, starting at 8:30 a.m. PT and playing with Oregon, Pepperdine and Arizona. The round will be televised nationally on Golf Channel, with live broadcast from 1-4 p.m. PT/2-5 p.m. MT.
