Shadae Lawrence breaks discus record twice in one day; Jessica Ozoude exceeds own 200 meter mark at Mt. SAC Relays
LONG BEACH, Calif. | TORRANCE, Calif.—Senior transfer Shadae Lawrence broke the Colorado State outdoor record in the women's discus twice Saturday—first at the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State University, and later in the afternoon at the Mt. SAC Relays at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif.
Sophomore Jessica Ozoude broke her own school record of 23.65 in the women's 200 meters at Mt. SAC, finishing eighth in 23.46.
Lawrence initially broke the CSU record at the Beach Invitational with a toss of 202-8 (61.80m), shattering the previous record of 198-8 held by Shelly Greathouse-Borman since 1999, and garnered a second-place finish in a strong national field. At Mt. SAC later in the afternoon she crushed that mark to set the record again with a toss of 209-7 (63.89m) to lead all collegians and finish second overall to Brazil's Fernanda Martins (210-6/64.16m).
Lawrence's school-record mark of 209-7 is top collegiate mark in the country in 2019, based on results compiled entering today's competitions.
The discus event at the Beach Invitational was a strong one for Colorado State on Saturday, with senior Kelcey Bedard (185-05/56.52m) establishing a personal best in a seventh-place finish to move up to sixth on CSU's all-time outdoor list. Sophomore Tarynn Sieg (171-07/52.31m) moved up to 15th on CSU's all-time list in a personal best performance to finish 16th in Saturday's competition, her second personal best in the past three days. Junior Maria Muzzio finished in 12th place (175-01/53.38m) in a season-best, just shy of her personal best 175-6 that ranks 11th on CSU's outdoor list.
BEACH INVITATIONAL NOTES
Head Coach Brian Bedard:
On Lawrence's two school records in one day…
"I told Shadae when we landed on Wednesday, 'I'm going to throw you on Thursday (at Bryan Clay), then a day off, then throw you again at the Beach Invitational,' because there's a high-caliber field and good competition against the best throwers in the country. Then, depending on conditions and how she does, she'd have the opportunity to jump in a car and go to Mt. SAC (in Torrance) and get another competition in. 'Or, if we feel good about what you did, then we wouldn't.' She did well (school record) and was fired up and wanted to throw again at Mt. SAC, and she really blew it up (with another school record)."
On the opportunity to compete as much as possible at several meets in the area…
"We want to really take advantage of that. We come all the way out here, so try to get to three or four meets, and do the most that we can while we're here. It's tough on our coaching staff, and Lindsey (Easton operations director), trying to coordinate getting everybody to the places they need to be, but it's all about giving them the best opportunity to succeed and making the most of the opportunity, and they've responded in a big way this week. That's what you want to see."
Overall…
"What's exciting is we had a lot of season and lifetime bests, and school records in several event areas. As a staff we always look back at the end of the meets and assess was it worth it, did we get enough done, and hands down, we did. It's a crazy trip but we got a lot done."
