CSU and New Mexico are tied at 9-under after the Rams count four under-par rounds in their score

TUCSON, Ariz. – Colorado State put together four under-par rounds for the team score and is tied for the lead after the opening round of the 2019 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship Friday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the Mountain West, will be played at OMNI Tucson National Resort's Catalina Course (Par 72 - 7,194 yards) in Tucson, Ariz., with the winner getting the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

Playing in the opening wave of the day as the No. 2 seed with top-seeded UNLV, the No. 44-ranked Rams had two sub-70 rounds along with two other under-par rounds to post a 9-under 279 and sit atop the leaderboard in a tie with New Mexico. Boise State is one shot back at 8-under 280, with San Diego State in fourth at 7-under 281. UNLV and Fresno State are tied for fifth at 6-under 282 as just five shots separates first from eighth.

"I'm happy with our play today," head coach Christian Newton said. "Low scores are out there and we will have to continue to make birdies. We look forward to competing this weekend."

CSU is led by junior AJ Ott and sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri, with the duo each recording a 3-under 69 for the day and are currently tied for seventh. Ott was steady throughout the round, with no bogeys and three birdies, including his last two holes, while Suyasri had an eagle and three birdies as part of his round. Freshman Oscar Teiffel was next in a tie for 13th at 2-under 70, as he had a team-high five birdies on the day. Senior Jake Staiano is tied for 20th at 1-under 71, with freshman Davis Bryant rounding out the team scoring in a tie for 49th at 3-over 75. New Mexico's Sean Carlon and Alex Lee of Fresno State both shot a 5-under 67 and one shot ahead of a group of four golfers at 4-under.

The Rams will go off in the final wave for the second round, starting at 9:40 a.m. MT and playing with New Mexico and Boise State. Live stats are available at http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=participants&tid=17981.
