CSU place three in top 15 but unable to hold off surging New Mexico

TUCSON, Ariz. – Colorado State again used four under-par rounds but couldn't hold off a hard-charging New Mexico squad and finished as runner-up at the 2019 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship Sunday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the Mountain West, was played at OMNI Tucson National Resort's Catalina Course (Par 72 - 7,194 yards) in Tucson, Ariz., with the Lobos getting the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

Playing in the final pairings, CSU again had all five Rams shooting par or better, with the four counters all combining for an 8-under 280 and tied the former tournament 54-hole record of 30-under 834. However, it wasn't enough as UNM put together a 14-under 274 on the last day to finish at 33-under 831, three shots ahead of the Rams. Fresno State moved up two spots to finish third at 26-under 838, with defending champion UNLV in fourth at 25-under 839. San Diego State rounded out the top five teams at 24-under 840, as eight teams finished under par in the event.

CSU was led by junior AJ Ott, as he shot a 3-under 69 for the third day in a row and tied for fifth at 9-under 207, a season-best finish for the Fort Collins native. Ott had four birdies to one bogey on the day. Two other Rams finished in the top 15 as freshman Oscar Teiffel tied for 12 at 7-under 209 following a bogey-free 2-under 70 in the last 18 holes and senior Jake Staiano tied for 14th one shot back at 6-under 210 with a 1-under 71 on the last day. Sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri shot an even-par 72 in the last round and was 22nd at 3-under 213, while freshman Davis Bryant had 2-under 70 and tied for 23rd at 2-under 214.  New Mexico's Galven Green won the playoff on the third hole with teammate Sean Carlon for medalist honors, as the pair each finished at 13-under 203 for the event.

STAT OF THE TOURNAMENT
Every round that CSU counted in the tournament was an under-par round, finishing with tie of the former tournament record, set by the Rams in 2010

IN THEIR WORDS
Head coach Christian Newton
On the tournament overall
"We didn't count an over-par score all tournament and tied the old tournament record. So I'm really pleased with our play. New Mexico just played a little better in the end. You don't get to play defense in this sport, so we can only control ourselves. I'm proud of this team and how they go about their business. We will come home, rest and get ready for finals. Then it's onto to the NCAA Regionals.

NOTES
  • This was the third consecutive year that CSU has finished as the runner-up at the Mountain West Championship
  • The 834 ties the ninth lowest 54-hole total in team history, while the 30-under score is the seventh-best ever logged.
  • The three daily rounds are three of the top seven rounds on the year for the Rams.
  • CSU was one of two teams in the field with all five players to finish under par for the tournament, with San Diego State the other.
  • CSU tied the previous total score record for the tournament and bested the school under-par record for the tournament by 12 shots, set also in 2010
  • This was Ott's fourth top-10 finish on the year and third top five of his career
  • Teiffel had his team-high seventh top-20 placing in 11 tournaments played, while Staiano posted his fifth top-20 finish of the year
