Rams enter as the No. 7 seed and will play May 13-15
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Led by seventh-year head coach Christian Newton, the Colorado State men's golf team will head to the NCAA Regionals for the second time since 2012 when they play in the NCAA Pullman Regional hosted by Washington State, the NCAA announced today. The six regional sites will occur May 13-15, with the Rams playing at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash.
Making their 19th appearance in a NCAA Regional, the Rams enter the postseason ranked No. 42 according to Golfweek and No. 41 according to Golfstat, having played their strongest tournament schedule in the past 11 years. CSU also posted its third consecutive runner-up finish in the Mountain West Championship, the top back-to-back-to-back combined placings at the league tournament in program history. For the year, the Rams had two tournament victories in winning their fifth straight Ram Masters Invitational as well as the Paintbrush Invitational and recorded five other top-five finishes while finishing in the top 10 in all but one event.
Ranked in the top 10 on CSU's career scoring chart, senior Jake Staiano is making his third postseason appearance (only 12th Ram in history with three NCAA appearances), having also qualified an individual for the 2017 Austin Regional and tying for 38th. The Rams are led in scoring by sophomore Parathakorn Suyasri, who is averaging 72.11 strokes per round and has five top-20 finishes this year. Freshman Oscar Teiffel has an individual title, a team-high seven top-20 placings and a team-best +0.47 versus par. Freshman Davis Bryant is second in top-20 finishes with six, while junior AJ Ott posted his best result of the year with a tie for fifth at the Mountain West Championship, including a season-low 54-hole score of 7-under 209. Sophomore Jack Ainscough also has a pair of top-20 finishes on the season, as all five Rams that played in the recent league championship are each contributing more than 80 percent to the team score in their tournaments played in the lineup.
Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. There are six NCAA Regional sites, featuring a combined 81 teams (31 automatic bids to league champions and 45 at-large invites) and 45 individuals not on selected teams.
The other five sites for the Regionals are: Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, California, hosted by Stanford University; TPC Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, hosted by Coastal Carolina University and Myrtle Beach Regional Sports Alliance; University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky, hosted by the University of Louisville; University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia; and University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas, hosted by the University of Texas
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, to be played at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark., May 24-29. Colorado State has also only made two NCAA Championships appearances, which were at the conclusion of the 1998-99 and 2010-11 seasons.
This year's men's golf championships will be broadcast for the sixth consecutive year by Golf Channel with more than 100 news and tournament hours planned again for the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Golf Championships.
