Team has 18 individual qualifiers, 27 events of competition

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The next step is a bit chaotic, with 18 individual qualifiers and two relays from the Colorado State track & field team set to compete 27 times at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Sacramento, Calif., May 23-25, held at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University.

The top 48 competitors from the West will vie to place in the top 12 and earn a berth to the NCAA Championships on June 5-8 in Austin, Texas. Multi events are not competed at the preliminary round, with senior Hunter Powell already qualifying for nationals in the decathlon.

There are no finals, just first and/or quarterfinal/semifinal rounds to set qualifying; in field events, there are three attempts at each discipline. There is only one qualifying event on the track on Thursday, the 10,000 meters for both men and women. In field events, men's qualifiers will be determined in the hammer, the long jump and pole vault; the women have the javelin, high jump and long jump.

On Friday, 10 quarterfinal rounds will be held. In field events, men will qualify out of the javelin and discus, the women in discus and pole vault. Saturday's session concludes with 12 track quarterfinals and the shot put, high jump and triple jump for men, while the women have the triple jump and shot put.
