Jonsson just misses qualifying for NCAA Championships in hammer

Sant advances in qualifying for 100 meters

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Linnea Jonsson threw better than she has all season, and it left her in the most agonizing position a competitor can finish at the NCAA West Preliminaries.

Thirteenth place.

The senior's hammer throw of 201-9 just outside of Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University left her one inch and one spot shy of qualifying for the NCAA Track & Field Championships, held June 5-8 in Austin, Texas. Teammate and fellow senior Kelcey Bedard, the Mountain West champion and a second-team All-American in the event as a junior, finished 28th at 192-0.

Jonsson and Rebecca Keating of Missouri both threw 201-9, but in meters, Keating's throw measured at 61.50, Jonsson's at 61.49. But CSU head coach Brian Bedard said there may still be hope.

"Jonsson might still get in. The Arizona State girl (Beatrice Llano) will probably scratch due to an injury," he said. "So it gets a little crazier. Kelcey's warmup was great, but she competed scared. She can't do that in the discus tomorrow."

Marybeth Sant took her first step toward qualifying, advancing by placing third in the fifth heat of the 100 meters. Her time of 11.64 was the 23rd fastest of the day, but it earned her an automatic berth into Friday's quarterfinal round. In those heats, the top three automatically qualify for the NCAA meet, with the three fastest remaining times also making the trip to Austin. Sant also has the first round of qualifying in the 200, making for a challenging day.

"It won't be bad," assistant coach Ryan Baily said. "Today she ran only to advance.

"We are only focused on one event, the 100, then we focus on the 20; in the men's version, Eric Hamer came across in 29:15.91 to place 15th.
0, then the 4x100 (relay). One at a time."

Isa Bynum was the first Ram to compete, going 23-4 in the long jump, finishing sixth in the second flight and 34th overall.

On the track, freshman Germain Barnes was just off his personal best of 51.96, coming in at 52.20 in the 400 hurdles to finish 31st overall after coming in seeded 44th. Mountain West champion Lauren Gale finished fifth in the final heat of the 400, running a 54.02, to put the freshman 31st in the field. Bailey Ness finished 43nd in the 10,000, coming in at 35:44.04; in the men's version, Eric Hamer came across in 29:15.91 to place 15th to close out the day's schedule.
.

The meet gets going Friday for Destinee Rocker (100 hurdles) and Jessica Ozoude (200) with the first round of the qualifying in those events. Ali Kallner has her qualifying race for the 3,000 steeplechase, while in field events, Bedard, Tarynn Sieg and Shadae Lawrence will compete in the discus; Jackson Morris in the javelin, and then join Adam Dawson in the discus.

The first event is the women's discus at 1 p.m.; action starts on the track with the women's 100 hurdles at 5:30 p.m.
