Conference discus champion named female field athlete of the year in Mountain region
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Shadae Lawrence has reached distances with a discus which haven't been seen for some time, leading to the Colorado State senior's selection as the Mountain Region women's field athlete of the year by the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association.
In addition, head coach Brian Bedard was named the women's head coach of the year in the region.
Award winners came from a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches, with only individuals from those affiliated schools eligible. Winners for male and female track and field athletes, as well as a coach and head coach, are selected in each of nine regions.
Lawrence, the 2017 NCAA Champion in the event and a three-time All-American, let fly a throw of 213-5 to win the Mountain West Championships. It was the longest throw of the season, and the sixth best of all time in the NCAA as only two other competitors have thrown farther. Last weekend in the NCAA West Preliminaries, she qualified for the national meet for a fourth time.
The Rams had six individuals and the women's 4x100 relay qualify for the NCAA Championships, all but two on the women's side. He guided CSU women to the MW team title, part of an indoor/outdoor season sweep for both genders this calendar year. Joining Lawrence at the NCAA Championships are Kelcey Bedard (discus), Destinee Rocker (100 hurdles), Tarynn Sieg (shot put), Adam Dawson (discus) and Hunter Powell (decathlon); Rocker is part of the relay team along with Lauren Gale, Marybeth Sant and Jessica Ozoude.
The NCAA Track & Field Championships will be held June 5-8 at Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium in Austin, Texas.
