Lawrence, Bedard close out meet for Rams on Saturday in women's discus
AUSTIN, Texas – The team traveled to the NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships on Monday, so Adam Dawson had to bide his time.
Colorado State's redshirt freshman didn't compete at Mike A. Myers Track and
Soccer Stadium in Austin until Friday, leaving him a bit anxious to get under the lights.
"Honestly, I don't get super nervous before I throw, but I was super excited," Dawson said. "I was ready to get after it. We traveled out on Monday, and I was sitting around cheering on other athletes and getting ready to throw, and the anticipation was kind of getting to me. I felt pretty good throughout the week, and then even today. It sort of hit me a little bit, a few hours before we left: 'Oh yeah, I get to throw today.'"
His first throw in the discus was his best effort of the day, a 181-0 which placed him 17th overall, garnering him an honorable mention All-American designation.
He was the only Ram to compete Friday, and he was in the first flight. He was sixth after his group was done, and even though he wasn't able to better his first attempt, the fact he was consistent was a plus.
"I know I can do so much better," he said. "Even after this year, improving so much, I want to be able to come back next year and do the same thing."
Only better. It marked the second day in a row head coach Brian Bedard had a redshirt freshman in a throwing event, with Tarynn Sieg in the shot put on Thursday. Bedard is confident both know they belong at the meet and should carry greater expectations moving forward.
"Being a part of it, seeing what it's all about … I made sure they stayed around and watched the final so they know what it's like," he said. "Then I asked them right afterwards, can you compete at this level, was it too intimidating, can you do this, are you out of your league? They said no, I can do this. That's part of the process.
"Especially when you see if Tarynn throws anywhere close to what she did at the NCAA West meet, she's a top-four, top-five finisher here. Adam, if he's close to his PR, he makes the final and he's competing with these guys. I think they were exposed to OK, I've got some more work to do but it's not out of reach and it's something I can do."
Bedard's assessment was he could have had each of them better prepared, especially when it comes to Sieg. That will alter how he trains her next season, because she throws the shot put, discus, hammer and javelin. She still likely will, but now she has a primary focus.
"She shows the ability to be an elite shot putter, and we need to spend more time there," he said. "The way we did it before, she was probably spending two days a week on the shot and then working on everything else. We probably have to move another day in there; three days would help a lot. She's just so good, she makes everything go far. If I get greedy as a coach, she won't reach her full potential."
The meet concludes Saturday, and for the Rams, both Shadae Lawrence and Kelcey Bedard will compete in the women's discus. Lawrence enters the competition with the best throw of the season, a 213-5 which stands as the school record and the sixth best collegiate throw of all time. The event is scheduled to begin at 4:05 p.m. and can be streamed live on ESPN3.
