Eric Hamer Takes First Place in Labor Day Run

FORT COLLINS, COLO – Taking it to the streets was Eric Hamer on Labor Day morning as the Colorado State track and field senior enjoyed a first-place finish in the third-annual Fortitude 10K that zig-zags through west Fort Collins.

The 2018 All-American exhausted his eligibility last season in cross country, but still has a spring track season of eligibility left in his storied Ram career. The Monument, Colo. native scored for the Rams in each of the past two program-best ninth-place finishes in the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Monday was all for leisure for Hamer who said, "I thought it would be fun to come and do something competitive while I'm sitting out cross – do a little bit of roads and then back to track in the spring. I've run track and cross-country races and maybe some trails, but never running on main street. I just wanted to soak it up, because I love Fort Collins; it's great to run here."

Hamer crossed the finish line at CSU's Canvas Stadium at 30 minutes, 32 seconds – a cool 88 seconds before the next runner in the citizen's race that included over 7,000 participants.

The clocked time of 30:32 also marked a faster time then his coach, CSU assistant Andrew Epperson, who won last year's citizen's race in 30:56. Notably, Epperson is competing in about a month's time in the marathon of the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar.

"I texted him congratulations," Epperson said. "It is fun to see someone from not only Fort Collins, but also from CSU and one of our programs to win it so it is exciting. I'm happy for him. It is a cool event."

Meanwhile, the cross country team enters race week with its season-opening meet scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. at the Wyoming Open in Cheyenne, Wyo.
