CSU improves again on its previous round against a top-flight field
ROCKY FACE, Ga. – Colorado State again improved on its previous round and finished in a tie for seventh at the 2019 Carpet Capital Collegiate, Sept. 6-8. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Georgia Tech, is being played at The Farm Golf Club (Par 72 – 7,180 yards) in Rocky Face, Ga.
In a field that featured five teams in the top 25 and three others receiving votes in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, the Rams improved three more shots over their second round score to record a 4-over 292 and tie for seventh with Clemson at 21-over 885. Host Georgia Tech led from start to finish, shooting an even-par 292 in the final round to win at 3-under 861, 20 shots ahead of North Florida, Charlotte and East Tennessee State in a tie for second at 881. South Carolina and Alabama tied for fifth at 19-over 883.
CSU had two golfers finish in the top 20, as senior AJ Ott was the top finisher for the Rams in a tie for 15th at 3-over 19, with sophomore Davis Bryant one shot back at 4-over 220, tied for 18th. Junior Cullen Plousha tied for 37th at 10-over 26, while fellow junior Parathakorn Suyasri tied for 42nd at 11-over 27. Sophomore Oscar Teiffel rallied in the final round with the top round of the day for the Rams at 1-under 71 to tie for 63rd at 17-over 233. Georgia Tech's Luke Schniederjans took the medalist honor at 9-under 207, five shots ahead of teammate Tyler Strafaci at 4-under 212.
"I'm very pleased with our play this week," head coach Christian Newton said. "We took home some great wins against some potential top-25 programs in their own backyard. Davis and AJ had a great start to the fall and I look for more good play for from them the rest of the season. I'm especially proud of Oscar's fight to come back and shoot under par after having such a tough day yesterday."
The Rams return home to try and win their fifth consecutive Ram Masters Invitational Presented by Pedersen Toyota, Sept. 16-17. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Fort Collins Country Club, starting at 8 a.m. each day, and is free to the public.
