Rams Collect Eight First-Place Finishes in Day Two of Potts Invitational

1/11/2020 6:50:00 PM | Track & Field

BOULDER, Colo. – Breaking off the rust in the first meet back, the Colorado State track and field teams racked up eight first-place victories Saturday at the Potts Invitational to go along with the three from Friday inside the Indoor Practice Facility.

The time in between the cross country season and the first meet of 2020 boded well for the long distance squad. Sophomore Tom Oates, making his official CSU debut in track, won the men's mile with a time of 4:17.90, leading a caravan of five total Rams in the top-10. In almost identical style, the women's side placed five top-10 finishes in the mile with redshirt-senior Ali Kallner representing the top finisher in third place at 5:01.08. Four Rams clocked top-10 times in the women's 3,000-meter race as well.

In dominating fashion, the Rams swept the remaining throwing event – the shot put. Making his official indoor debut, freshman Mariano Kis tossed a 53'9'' with the next four finishes all donning the green and gold. Senior Maria Muzzio took the top spot with a throw of 47'8.50'' in the women's event with freshman Morgan Stewart right behind her in second.

Senior Amelia Harvey having never ran the indoor 200-meter race did so Saturday and won with a time of 24.85 – good for 15th in school history. The other two first-place finishes for the women's team came from Lauren Gale in the 400 meters and Macy Kreutz in the 800 meters, however both were competing unattached.

The final event winners for the men's squad came from Ryan Birkmeier in the 800-meter race, and Adam Stark in the 400-meter race. For Birkmeier, a sophomore, it marked his first indoor 800m competition with a time of 1:54.60. Stark, a transfer from Northern Colorado, clocked a 48.15, which is under a second away from his PR.

Other notable results included Germain Barnes logging the ninth-best mark in school history in the 200-meter race in his first attempt in the event. Also, Harvey grabbed a PR in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.87 – good for a share of 16th on the all-time school list.

Coach's Corner
Head coach Brian Bedard
On the conclusion of the first meet after the break…
"Similar to yesterday and what usually happens in these first meets after the long holiday break – there were good things and then there were areas we need work on. I believe the distance crew did a great job after not being in real competition for some months. We also had many debuts either from freshmen or student-athletes competing in new events, so it was nice to see where they are at in their progression."
