FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Four Rams will compete Thursday in the pentathlon to start Colorado State's action in the Air Force Invitational at the Cadet Field House on the campus of Air Force.
After utilizing a full squad last week in the Potts Invitational, Colorado State dials it back numbers-wise, sending a total of 51 student-athletes with 21 on the women's side, and 30 men in competition. Not competing will be the long-distance groups to avoid the high elevation and not run in back-to-back meets.
On the docket for Thursday's action is Amelia Harvey, Lexie Keller, Aria Tate, and Jordan Lanning in the pentathlon that includes the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800-meter run. Harvey, a senior from Pine Creek HS – 20 miles from the Cadet Field House, obtained CSU's eighth-best pentathlon mark (3713) in this season's opener at the Mines Alumni Classic and Multis meet.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach Brian Bedard
On the focus of the meet…
"This meet for us is mostly throws, jumps and sprints. It is one of the best facilities in the country for vaults and jumps. The sprints have an opportunity on a fast track. I'm looking for improved execution in meets. Our student-athletes may have trained well during the break, however getting back into competition mode takes some time and not something you can duplicate. Timing is critical in the technical events and you can't get that in training or drills - only meets."
On not sending a full group…
"The distance groups will stay home and train, because they competed last weekend and it is not an ideal meet for them given the altitude being at 7,000 feet above sea level. It is tough to hit times there and at maximum effort it makes for a tougher recovery. It is not uncommon as we usually do this strategically."
