USAFA, Colo. – Aria Tate and Lexie Keller leapt into Colorado State track and field's all-time indoor top-10 list in the pentathlon after their first- and second-place performances Thursday at the Air Force Invitational.
Tate, from Irmo, S.C., won two of the five events to go along with two runner-up finishes and a fourth place to win the pentathlon by a margin of 160 points. The senior obtained a score of 3868, jumping to the third-best total in school history after previously occupying the 14th-best mark.
Meanwhile, Keller, on her 20th birthday, moved to the No. 10 spot on the Rams' all-time indoor list with a score of 3708. The sophomore from Albuquerque, N.M. compiled three PRs, including a victory in the long jump with at 19'0.75'', which tied the school's 10th-best mark.
To start the day at the Cadet Field House, Tate won the 60-meter hurdles clocking a personal-best time of 8.56 – good for a share of seventh place on CSU's all-time list. Next, she recorded a 5'6.6'' in the high jump, penciling in a PR for the event in a pentathlon. Consecutive second-place finishes in the shot put and long jump gave Tate enough cushion to coast to the victory despite the fourth-place 800-meter showing.
Northern Colorado's Mackenzie Pettit took third (3615) in front of Ram freshman Jordan Lanning who finished with 3319 in fourth. Lanning, of Bayfield, Colo., registered PRs in the 60mh, HJ, and 800m.
Lastly, senior Amelia Harvey finished in fifth place, but was plagued by a no measure in the event's second competition – the high jump. If the senior would have replicated the lowest score among the competitors, she would have finished above Lanning. In the day's first event, Harvey crossed the 60mh behind Tate for second with a PR that put her in sole position of No. 16 all-time in CSU history after previously sharing it. She closed out the day on a high note by winning the 800m by 2.11 seconds.
The Rams continue action in the Air Force Invitational on Friday and Saturday in field events and sprints.
Coach's Perspective
Assistant Coach Shane Ryan - Multi and Jumps
"Their day could not have started much better as all four ran a personal best in the hurdles. However, the pentathlon is along competition. Each woman fought through ups and downs. Overall, I'm happy with how they competed and we had a strong showing. It's a process and this weekend really emphasized wha twe need to work on before conference. This group is special and I'm excited to see them progress this season."
