Conference reshuffles schedule for 2020-21
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State women's basketball team received a new schedule of conference games from the Mountain West that features 10 two-game series, announced Tuesday morning by the league office.
Â
The new format emphasizes the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches and staff while significantly reducing travel. The Conference has moved to a 20-game schedule under a modified format that will play out over 11 weeks within the context of state, county and local guidelines.
Â
"We are just excited to have a schedule and be able to prepare for some games," head coach Ryun Williams said. "The conference did a tremendous job at adapting and completing a schedule that accommodates every institution."
Â
League play will begin with one two-game series taking place before Christmas for all 11 teams. For Colorado State that starts with a home series against San Diego State on Dec. 8 and 10. After the holiday break, Conference action will resume on Dec. 28 and conclude March 1.
Â
In the new format, Mountain West teams will face each other in a two-game series in the same week with a one-day break between contests. Each institution will have five home and five road series, reducing the regular season travel schedule by four weeks to help mitigate potential virus exposures.
Â
"We play everybody twice which is something that we haven't done before so we will see a true champion," Williams added. "That is a positive for this year's schedule. The aspect of playing teams back-to-back creates interesting challenges in terms of turnaround in adjustments and play. That will be new, but we look forward to it."
Â
This is a one-year model adopted specifically to address the unique challenges of the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
Conference play will determine the seeding for the 2021 MW Women's Basketball Championship, which will be held March 7-10 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Â
The conference schedule is not the only games the Rams will be in action for as the non-conference contests are yet to be finalized. In mid-September, the NCAA approved a first contest date for Nov. 25.
