Rams Ease into Holiday Break with 79-61 Win at Denver

Colorado State Breeze by Denver to Improve to 7-1

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Cruising into a 19-day break, the Rams will enjoy a 7-1 overall record after defeating Denver 79-61 Friday evening at Hamilton Gymnasium.

The win over the Pioneers marked Colorado State's second series sweep, joining their two victories over San Diego State in Mountain West play. Denver dropped to 2-5 on the season. After the 6-6 tie, CSU did not trail and only allowed the Pioneers to tie it at 12-all, before the Rams slowly but surely kept extending their lead onto victory.

Reigning MW Player of the Week Lore Devos notched her fourth-straight double-double and fifth of the season with 10 rebounds and a game-high 18 points. Sophomore guard McKenna Hofschild did her usual facilitating with five assists – her sixth game in a row with at least that many – plus 17 points. Tori Williams continued her double-digit scoring streak to all eight games played as she tallied 14. Meanwhile off the bench, Jamie Bonnarens continued to be an asset with her third game in a row dropping 15 points.

"We were a little out of sync in some ways, but we fought through it and calmed down to get into some kind of rhythm," head coach Ryun Williams said. "However, when you do play the same team twice in a week, you'll see that because each team will try to take away what the other did well in the last time out. Our bench was important in this one due to the foul trouble and they not only kept the lead but grew the margin for us.
Although the game was relatively in hand for the Rams throughout, it wasn't without its struggles, especially with fouls and free throws. The Rams accumulated 22 fouls including Cali Clark fouling out, while the Pioneers had 23 fouls and one of their taking a seat at the end as well. Neither team took advantage at the line with CSU going 13-of-22 and DU 15-of-26.

The Pioneers started off the first fast with a 6-2 lead, but the Rams scored 10 unanswered to go up 12-6. Within that stretch, Hofschild had a quick step back inside the 3-point line that was unguard-able and foreshadowed more of her quickness that was troublesome later for the DU defense. That would come just at the end of the first with the 5-5 guard hitting a 3 in the closing seconds for the 25-16 lead.

The fouls and free throw game really got going in the second with no team pulling away and CSU going into the half with a 42-29 halftime advantage. The difference in the second half was all the Rams not settling for the 3-ball – which wasn't going down as they shot 24% in the game – and getting to the rack. Bonnarens' two 3s in the third quarter represented all of the team's long balls, but the Rams still scored 22 points to inch their lead to as much as 20 at one point.

Hofschild, Williams and Petra Farkas started the Rams off in the fourth with paint points before Devos added seven points and four rebounds to help put it away for the Rams. CSU finished the game shooting 40.5% and holding DU to just 32.8% from the field, while also outrebounding the home team 49-37.

"We've been through a tough schedule already, so I like how we've been challenged early," Williams added. "But the grind of the Mountain West is different. This was a road win which is always welcomed but we will need to improve on some things after the break. With that being said, I am so happy they will be able to get home and take a breath. It has been a tough year off the court with online schooling and COVID, so this break is much needed. This is a fun team, and I can't wait until they get back."

The Rams will enjoy a lengthy holiday break of 19 days until they tip off again and restart Mountain West play at UNLV at 6 p.m. on Jan. 7th.
