CSU moves into a share of second in the Mountain West standings with its sixth consecutive home victory

FORT COLLINS, Colo.  – Colorado State moved into at least a tie for second in the Mountain West, pulling away in the second half for a 95-77 victory over visiting UNLV Saturday afternoon in Moby Arena. With their seventh conference win in the last eight games, the Rams improved to 16-8 overall and 7-4 in the conference, while the Runnin' Rebels slipped to 11-12 and 6-4 in the league.

The teams battled through the first 16 minutes of the game, with UNLV going on an 8-0 run over 1:23 to built its biggest lead of the game at 33-25 with 3:41 to go in the opening period. However as they have been resilient through this stretch, the Rams answered, closing out the half on a 16-3 surge, including a highly-contested triple from freshman Isaiah Stevens as the half expired to send CSU to the halftime break with a 41-36 advantage.

UNLV scored the first three of the second half to cut it to 41-39, but the Rams slowly pulled away, scoring the next four points to go up six and never see the lead shrink lower than four at 50-46. At that point, CSU went on another run, this time a 14-2 surge over 4:05 to make it a 16-point game at 66-48 with just over 11 minutes to play. The Runnin' Rebels got it down to nine with 5:40 to play, but that was as close as the visitors would get, as CSU eventually built the lead as high as 24 in the closing minutes.

Colorado State ended the game at a stellar 61.5 percent (32-of-52) from the field, including 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from the three-point line. CSU was also solid at the free throw line, going 20-of-28 (71.4 percent). UNLV was just 42.0 percent (29-of-69) overall and 31.3 percent (10-of-32) beyond the arc. CSU won the boards 34-32 and outscored the Runnin' Rebels 20-5 on the fast break.

CSU had six players with seven or more points and four in double figures, led by Stevens with 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting overall, including makes on all five three-point attempts. Redshirt-senior Nico Carvacho had his 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman David Roddy chipped in 14. Sophomore Adam Thistlewood finished with 12, all coming in the second half. UNLV was led by Bryce Hamilton with 28, but CSU's defense limited leading scorer Amauri Hardy to just four points.
