Maria Muzzio’s shot put performance lands her MW weekly honor
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Throwing the season's best shot put in the Mountain West over the weekend earned senior Maria Muzzio MW's Field Athlete of the Week honors, announced Tuesday by the league office.
Muzzio, of Fairfax, Va., tossed the shot put 52'1.75'' at the UCCS Mountain Lion Open this past Saturday, winning the event for her fifth shot put victory of the indoor season. Nationally, the distance stands as the 31st-best mark across the NCAA. For perspective, the nation's leading throw comes in at 59'7.5''.
Personally, the throw set a personal record and moved her up CSU's all-time list in terms of distance but not position. Already at No. 8 on the school list, Muzzio improved eight inches upon her last PR, pulling within two inches of Jessica Sharbono's seventh-place mark set in 2014.
"I knew she was going to PR and I told her that," head coach Brian Bedard said. "You could tell in her preparation and training leading up to the meet. Now it's about continuing to improve, so we are reaching the peak of our abilities by the conference meet."
The award for the week of Feb. 5-9 is Muzzio's first of her career. It is the third weekly award this track season for CSU, joining Allam Bushara and Tom Oates.
Up next, the Rams will split up the team with long distance traveling to the Iowa State Classic and another group to the Don Kirby Invitational. The MW Championships are set for Feb. 27-29 in Albuquerque, N.M.
