After Day Two, Ram Women Share Lead While Men Hold Second
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Podium finishes and top qualifying times put the Colorado State track and field programs in a healthy spot going into Saturday's finale of the Mountain West Indoor Championships.
Five Rams found themselves leaning over to receive medals Friday during the second day of competition at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Holding onto the lead from day one, the women tallied 18 points to stay atop at 46 points, but New Mexico put up 36 on the day to force a tie. The men totaled 48 points to position themselves in second with 62 points, trailing Air Force by 13.5 points.
Eric Lundgren and Mauricio Galindo Vega started the day off by completing their heptathlon each recording personal records that inched them higher up on CSU's all-time list. Lundgren, a junior from Cheyenne, Wyo., PR'd the pole vault, 1,000-meter race and placed second in the 60-meter hurdles to make 5047 points – 28 points higher than his previous best – for second place. Galindo Vega, a freshman from Guatemala City, Guatemala, PR'd the same events for a third-place finish and concluded with 4767 points – a 16-point increase. Lundgren and Galindo Vegas still reside eighth and 12th on CSU's all-time list with the school's No. 6 holder, Hunter Powell, in their ear on the sidelines.
The other most notable events happened simultaneously with the throwing events and long distance. Both resulted in podium finishes. In the net, junior Tarynn Sieg won the weight throw, while Adam Dawson and Lane Walter went 2-3 on the men's side. Over on the acclaimed "World's Fastest Indoor Track", Eric Hamer coasted to the 5,000-meter win.
In a teasing fashion, the rest of the excitement was quarantined into qualifying events, leaving a sample for Saturday's grand finale. On the women's side, Jessica Ozoude and Lauren Gale clocked the second-best times in 200m and 400m, respectively, while Ali Kallner notched the third-best mile time. Aria Tate will see day two in the 60-meter hurdles as will freshman Bailee Carr in the 800m.
A trio of Rams (Adam Stark, Tom Willems, and DeVon Washington) will fill the lanes in the 400m after going 4-5-7. Four other track events saw six total Rams ready to toe the blocks to help CSU defend its titles Saturday.
The women's high jump starts Saturday at 9:30 a.m. along with the other field events yet to make their debut before the track finals start at 11:10 a.m.

On Day Two…
"I thought the Rams fought hard even when we didn't execute in every event. We missed out on some points today, which is frustrating, but there's a lot of meet left. I'm confident both teams will come out and compete well tomorrow. [muscle emoji]"
