The Rams Capture the 2020 Mountain West Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – For the third time in four years, the Colorado State men's track and field program will happily drive the eight hours back to the Glen Morris Fieldhouse with the Mountain West Indoor Championship trophy in hand.

Coming into the meet as favorites, the Rams trailed the top spot in day one (4 points) and day two (13.5 points) of competition before putting together an 87-point Saturday afternoon at the Albuquerque Convention Center to defend their indoor conference title. Colorado State totaled 149 points, holding off Air Force who finished with 134.50.

Since the first Mountain West Indoor Championship in 2000, CSU has compiled four men indoor titles (2002, 2017, 2019, 2020), including 14 total top-3 finishes. Head coach Brian Bedard earned his third coach of the year honor, joining the ones that paired with the previous two championships.

Unfortunately, the opposite can be said about the women's squad after entering the final day with a share of the lead but winding up in third place. UNLV ran away with it on a 115-point performance to end with 161 points. San Diego State followed at 126.50 and then CSU at 108.50. For the women, the podium finish marks their 15th trip out of 21 tries.

Individually, CSU notched a dozen top-3 finishes on the day, bringing the final total to 22 for the meet. Four individuals won five event titles with the one doing double-duty being Tarynn Sieg in the weight throw Friday and the shot put on Saturday.

Showing off their depth and consistency, the men only had two champions, but each set the tone. Sophomore Germain Barnes won the 60-meter hurdles, crossing at 8.01 – a personal record that sends him from 16th all-time at CSU to eighth. Andrew Doctor made it a 1-2 finish and a sizeable 18 points between the two. On Friday, Eric Hamer won the 5,000-meter race and then competed to second place in the 3,000m Saturday to put his contribution on the weekend to 18 points.

Junior Isa Bynum and freshman Tom Willems stepped up onto the No. 2 spot in the triple jump and 400m, respectively. Bynum moved up 10 spots in CSU's record book to fourth and joined the exclusively group of four that have reached the 50'0'' barrier, which is right where he landed. Willems went from fifth all-time in the green uniform to third after clocking a 47.20. Each added eight points for the team.

The other area that the Rams leaned on was a dozen points from the shot put with three Rams scoring.

On the ladies' side, Sieg and Lauren Gale claimed first place in the shot put and 400m, respectively. Sieg threw a season-best and was joined on the podium by Maria Muzzio who increased her PR and now is sixth in school history. Gale set the school record with a time of 53.48 and defended her event title as she stepped onto the first-place podium in 2019.

Coach's Corner
Head coach Brian Bedard
On the day…
"We tried to screw it up a few times as we had a few events that didn't go as expected, but we rallied the guys and said 'Air Force competes extremely tough and if we gave them an opportunity then they'd give us everything they had'. That is what they did. I have a lot of respect for that coaching staff. We needed a great final day and that's what we got today. I think we really pulled it together. They stuck together through thick and thin and kept supporting each other."

On the men…
"It definitely was not a perfect meet as we struggled a bit on Friday, but they came out and competed aggressively and encouraged each other well. It was a complete team effort. Individually, it was a special meet for Eric Hamer."

On the women…
"They fought from start to finish. We struggled in a few events that hurt us, and UNLV had a heck of a meet. Tarynn Sieg and Lauren Gale really stuck out with remarkable performances."

On the program's success…
"It reaffirms what we are really trying to do which is having a whole team that can score in every event if we can. Our recruiting philosophy is to recruit people with good character that want to work hard and buy-in to what we are doing. We teach the process up there [Fort Collins] and how to compete."
