No. 10 Colorado State Plays No. 7 Air Force Sunday in Mountain West Tournament
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Looking to turn over a new leaf, the Colorado State women's basketball team will go back to 0-0 with the start of the Air Force Reserve Mountain West Championships Sunday inside of the Thomas and Mack Center.
Coincidentally enough, the Rams are facing familiar foe, Air Force, as the two schools just concluded the regular season with two days ago as the Falcons got the upper hand. Colorado State enters the tournament holding the No. 10 seed after finishing 12-17 overall and 6-12 in the MW. Air Force grabbed the No. 7 seed on its strong conference season at 7-11 despite going 9-20 overall. The tip is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. PT/5:30 p.m. MT.
On the third Saturday of January, the Rams powered past the Falcons, 60-40 – Colorado State's largest margin among its six Mountain West victories. The Rams jumped on the Falcons early with a 23-point first quarter en route to a 60-40 win at Moby Arena. USAFA shot 28.8 percent from the field, while CSU fared a 48 percent clip led by a Makenzie Ellis team-high 19 points and eight points. Just four days ago, the Falcons got their revenge with a five-point victory at home. The Rams trailed Air Force by five points midway through the fourth and pulled within one point with 50 seconds left, but AF staved off CSU's comeback attempt.
In the all-time series, CSU holds the significant advantage at 50-13. The Rams lost last season's contest at the Academy but had won the previous 10 meetings in Clune Arena. On neutral ground, AF leads 2-1.
Rams in the Mountain West Tournament
Rams in the Mountain West Tournament are 17-18 since the MW start in 1999-20. Head coach Ryun Williams is 7-6 since taking the helm in 2012-13. The Rams hold one conference tournament title, occurring in 2000-01. Last year, CSU lost in game one to Utah State in a three-point affair. Four of CSU's probable starters did not play in the contest as three were using redshirt years and the other - Makenzie Ellis entered in the summer as a graduate transfer. Colorado State's last win the MW Tourney came against Fresno State on Mar. 6, 2018. The last time the Rams and Air Force met in the conference postseason was 2010-11 with AF winning by three. The other two meetings were split (CSU in 2002 and AF in 2007.)
Off The Tip
• During conference play, Andrea Brady has compiled 144 rebounds (8.0 rpg, sixth in MW) with a team-high 199 points (11.1 ppg). She recorded 23 points against Boise State and set a CSU record 23 rebounds against San Jose State, which also stands fourth in NCAA D this season and tops in the MW. As of late, Tori Williams has put in double-digit games in three of the past four games. Jamie Bonnarens has done so in the two of the past three contests. Makenzie Ellis tallied 12 double-digit scoring games for 10.8 points per game.
• Defense continues to be the Rams' specialty. Sixteen times this season CSU, the MW second-best scoring defense (59.7 ppg), has held an opponent to 60 points or less. Eight times it has been below 50 points - a feat not replicated in the MW. Twenty times this season, CSU held its opponent to under 10 points in a quarter including four times it has been under five points.
• Ball control continues to be a strength for the Rams. CSU has had equal or less turnovers than its opponent in all but five games (UIW, BSU, NM, AFA, at NEV), ranking first in the Mountain West in turnovers per game (10.8), which checks in second nationally. The turnover margin (+4.55) is second in the MW and 31st in the NCAA. In all but 10 games (SDSUx2, BSU, TUL, NM, UNLVx2, FS, SJSU, AF), the Rams have scored more points off of the turnovers than its counterpart.
• If Brady plays just one game in the tournament with her pace (8.3 rpg), she'll finish with 249.3 rebounds which would put her near CSU's all-time top-10 single-season record list. She is also trying inch up on the single season offensive rebound list.
