Junior scores 280 for first time on 1-meter
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – As the season has progressed, so has junior Skylar Williams.
The Colorado State diver missed the final round of the 1-meter competition at the Air Force Invitational on Thursday by one spot, placing fifth. It didn't damper what was a very strong day, as she reset her personal best for the third consecutive meet, this time by a wide margin.
Williams made it through three rounds, starting with a score of 269.85 in the preliminaries. She came back in the second round with a personal record of 280.70 to win Group A. She posted a 271.55 in the quarterfinals, missing the semis and finals by placing third in her group.
She has already qualified for the NCAA Zone E meet in the event, but she raised the bar on her score by almost nine points.
"Skylar Williams was absolutely stellar in a talented field of women divers at the Air Force Invitational," CSU diving coach Chris Bergere said. "She was very consistent. She absolutely crushed her inward 1 ½ somersault pike, reverse and back 1 ½ pike for scores of 7-8.5."
Bergere said the other Rams didn't have the same consistency, though each had their bright spots. Rachel Holland led the rest of the pack with a score of 212 in the preliminaries.
"Rachel Holland did some nice dives, but missed her inward double tuck, which cost her," he said. "Jessica Albanna did a few nice dives, but in a strong field, you have to really be sharp and consistent. I think the 3-meter will be better for us. We remain positive."
The invitational continues Friday with the 3-meter competition, with the platform on Saturday. Preliminaries for both days begin at 10 a.m.
