Rams pick up experience for conference championships
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State's divers didn't make the cut the final two days of the Air Force Invitational, but coach Chris Bergere didn't leave the event discouraged with the performances.
The Rams competed on the platform Saturday, with junior Skylar Williams one spot out of the advancing, settling in at 13th with a score of 193.85. Rachel Holland tied for 25th at 163.60. McKenna O'Reilly scored a career-best 124.45.
"I'd rather be a little disappointed here than at conference," Bergere said. "This meet was set up the same way, so they'll be ready for it more so."
The Rams don't have a full platform to practice on, just a hybrid one where they can work on takeoffs. While Williams wasn't at her best (she has qualified for Zones on the platform), Bergere felt the event will have her and the rest of the group more prepared for the trip to Minneapolis.
He saw a greater comfort level from some of the younger performers on certain dives, a sign they are starting to repeat good habits in practice during competition.
"I definitely believe we'll be better at conference," Bergere said. "They will be more focused there, and it will mean more to them than and invitational. Going through the same format will help them again."
The Mountain West Championships run from Feb. 19-22 at the Freeman Aquatic Center.
