League Office Finalizes All-Mountain Awards with Rams Totaling 31 Nods
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Twenty-four student-athletes from Colorado State track and field combined for 30 All-Mountain West awards, while head coach Brian Bedard was named MW Men's Coach of the Year, announced by the league office Monday.
For the second year in a row and three of the last four, Colorado State claimed the Mountain West Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship. Just like the back-to-back MW titles, Bedard picked up the men's coach of the year accolade for the second straight year. Between indoor and outdoor season, Bedard has been selected eleven times as the conference's coach of the year.
An even split of 15 awards went to the men's and women's side for the Rams. In terms of the multiple award winners, senior Eric Hamer and freshman Tom Willems each garnered two medals. Hamer, of Monument, Colo., won the 5,000-meter race and finished runner-up in the 3,000m to bring his career medal mark to seven, including cross country. Willems, of Melbourne, Australia, crossed second in the 400m with the school's third-best time in history and he was a part of the distance medley relay squad that took third on day one of the championships.
Four women picked up two medals each during the three-day conference meet in Albuquerque. Junior Tarynn Sieg swept the throwing events, the weight throw and shot put, with the latter being a repeat title. Lauren Gale, Yolonda Johnson and Jessica Ozoude each ran a leg on the 4x400-meter relay team that concluded the meet's final event in third in addition to earning a medal in another event. Johnson ran in the other relay, the DMR, on day one for second place, while Ozoude finished third in the 200-meter race. Gale, a sophomore from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, obtained the school record of 53.48 in the 400m en route to defending her title.
Of the 13 men who garnered awards, nine were first-time award winners, include five freshmen. Junior Isa Bynum picked up his eighth award in his career, while Germain Barnes represents the next closest with four career All-MW awards.
Six of the 11 women earned their first-ever All-MW nod. Leading career-wise, junior Jessica Ozoude tallied her All-MW stack to nine. In two short years, Gale has seven, while Sieg and Jasmine Chesson each have four apiece.
All but two individuals, Hamer and Sieg, can start preparing for the outdoor season. Each qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships occurring in a familiar place, the Albuquerque Convention Center. Hamer will compete in the 5,000-meter race as he put up the 14th best time in the NCAA this season with a 13:40.11 at the Boston Season Opener. On Sieg's last throw to win the MW shot put title, she hit 55'6.5'' to land No. 12 on the NCAA performance list. Both will be in action Friday starting with Sieg at 5 p.m. and Hamer at 7 p.m.
