Junior places 13th on 1-meter springboard as Zone competition begins

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Matching up with some of the top divers in the region, Colorado State junior Skylar Williams did more than hold her own, but she fell one placing shy of advancing to the NCAA Championships on the 1-meter springboard during Monday's competition at the NCAA Zone E meet in Federal Way, Wash.

"She was awesome, really great," CSU diving coach Chris Bergere said. "She did two really solid lists of dives. She was right there on the bubble. It's stiff competition, and I think she's a bit disappointed, but she was right there with them."

Williams advanced to the finals with a score of 266.15, which put her 12th in the preliminaries in a field of 48. She sat 21st after her third dive, but hit 46.80 on her next three to move up to 14th, then took another step forward with a 47.65 on her final dive.

The finals consisted of five additional dives, where she pushed her score to 525.85, but slipped back one spot to 13th; the top 12 advanced to the NCAAs. Her finish was a vast improvement from the season before, when she finished 29th in the preliminaries with a score of 211.80.

Rachel Holland, by virtue of qualifying on the 3-meter, competed on 1-meter, scoring a 161.60 despite missing a dive. The experience alone, Bergere said, will help Holland with her top event.

"I definitely think so. Even overall, she's going to dive better tomorrow," he said. "She always dives better on the second day, and it's the better event for her."

Both will compete Tuesday on the 3-meter springboard, with Williams also competing on the platform Wednesday. Competition begins at noon both days.
