Colorado Native and Sibling of Current Ram Joins Track & Field Program
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A familiar name will join the Colorado Track and Field, as head coach Brian Bedard announced Thursday the addition of graduate transfer Megan Mooney for the 2020-21 indoor and outdoor seasons.
Mooney, coming from Florida State, is the older sister of current rising redshirt junior Michael Mooney. Her name may jog remembrance from her standout career at Horizon High School in Thornton where she still holds six school records and was the runner-up in the 3,200-meter race at the 2016 Colorado 5A Championships. In her Hawk career, Mooney also was an all-state cross country performer, and the 2014 USATF Junior Olympic national champion in the 3,000m as a sophomore.
Since then, Megan has spent the past four years in Tallahassee, Fla., contributing to the Seminoles' track and cross country programs. Most recently, she helped the Seminoles win their second-straight NCAA South Region Cross Country Championship and followed up with a 12th-place team finish in the NCAA Championships. This came after her career-best 29th placing at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships en route to FSU's runner-up showing. Four indoor track meets -- including an appearance at conference in the mile and distance medley relay -- comprised of Megan's final competitions at FSU. She will be graduating from FSU with a Bachelor's degree in Hospitality and Tourism before pursuing a Master's program in Tourism Management Colorado State.
Prior to her final season at FSU, Mooney compiled other highlights in the Garnet and Gold. In her junior cross country season, she scored at conference and then was the biggest mover over the final kilometer at regionals, rallying the team from third to first when she passed nine runners in the closing stretch to finish 18th and earn All-Region honors for the first time as the Noles advanced to nationals. That outdoor season, she punched a ticket to the NCAA East Preliminary in the 1500m. Even as a freshman, the Colorado native did not score lower than fourth on the cross country team.
"Megan will make the second sibling combo on the distance crew," CSU long distance coach Art Siemers said. "These connections make our team feel even more like a family. Megan brings a strong middle/distance pedigree from Florida State University and her experience will be invaluable to our young team."
Entering CSU, Megan holds athletic eligibility for the indoor and outdoor seasons. At FSU, she competed in mile (4:50.47 PR), 3,000m (9:29.91) and the DMR for indoor. For the latter, Mooney competed in 1500m (4:21.30 PR), 5000m (16:34.23 PR), and 2000m steeplechase (7:00.79 PR) in the outdoor season.
Competition runs deeper in the family than Michael and Megan when it comes to DI collegiate athletics and it starts from the top. Parents, Chris and Carrie Mooney (Boyd), ran for FSU, which guided Megan to the Sunshine State. Michael's twin, Madison, runs at Wisconsin and the youngest, Mallory, is set to begin her soccer career at Auburn this fall.
The other CSU brother-sister combo consists of promising junior Thomas Chaston and his younger sister Emily Chaston who will be entering her second year with the Rams as a redshirt freshman.
