Colorado State Adds Maria Torres From Madrid

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Bringing the number of incoming freshmen up to four, head coach Ryun Williams announced Tuesday the signing of Maria Torres from Madrid, Spain.

"Maria is a very long and skilled talent at 6-foot-1," Williams described. "She is able to pass, handle the ball, and shoot at a high level. She has grown up playing the point, so her skill set on the perimeter combined with her good size excites us."

After starting her high school studies at Ies Ramiro de Maeztu, Torres concluded high school at Ies Ortega y Gasset M86 – all while competing for Rivas Parque Sureste in basketball. For the club, she was a part of two regional championships (U18 in 2018; U16 in 2016) out of Madrid and finished as high as sixth nationally in 2019.

Unfortunately like many sport organizations worldwide, Torres' senior season was cut short due to COVID-19. Prior to cancellation, she was named a top-five player in the All-Star Charity Weekend National Senior Game. She was averaging a triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists a contest.

Torres' experience expands internationally with Spain's national teams as she has competed in tournaments in Slovenia, Greece and France. Additionally, she played in the 2018 International Junior U18 Stars Cup.

After being over 4,000 miles away from her older brother, Alberto – a rising senior on the Iowa Wesleyan basketball team in Mt. Pleasant – the siblings are now in the triple digits in distance and just one time zone difference as opposed to seven hours. Their parents, Jose Luis Torres and Elena Municio, each played semi-professional basketball, while Jose Luis stills spends time on the hardwood as a coach in the Rivas organization.

Torres joins the 2020 freshmen class that consists of Cali Clark, Makayla Hemmingway and Ellie Boni. Additionally, she becomes the sixth player from her high school on a collegiate roster in America.
