CSU leader to serve 10-year term, including 2026-28 as President
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State men's golf head coach Christian Newton has been named to the Golf Coaches Association of America National Advisory Board, effective July 1, 2020. This is the first time that a CSU coach has been named to this prestigious position.
Â
Newton was elected by his fellow coaches at the GCAA National Convention in December of 2019 and will become the Third Vice President on July 1, 2020. It is a 10-year commitment, where every two years he will move up the ranks after each Presidents' term is up. He will become the Second Vice President from 2022-24, First Vice President from 2024-26 before becoming President in 2026-28. Following that, he will serve a two-year stint as the Past President from 2028-30.
"I'm excited to serve on the GCAA National Advisory Board," Newton said. "I look forward to helping make this great profession even better and enhance the ground work done that helped me achieve many of my goals for continued growth for our coaches."
Â
Having finished his eighth season in 2019-20, the year will be memorable beyond the shortened campaign due to the worldwide health pandemic. In just six events, the Rams put together three team titles, including defending their home event and winning the prestigious Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. CSU finished the year ranked 19th in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll and had a pair of All-Americans in AJ Ott and Davis Bryant, who were also joined by Parathakorn Suyasri on the All-District squad.
Â
Recently in his tenure, Newton has led CSU to one of its most successful three year spans in program history in 2016-19, with three consecutive Mountain West runner-up finishes, the best three-year performance ever for the Rams. In earning 2018 Mountain West Coach of the Year honors, Newton led CSU to its ranking of No. 40 according to Golfweek and No. 44 according to Golfstat and its first NCAA Regionals berth under his leadership and as a team since 2012. In 2018-19, the Rams have again matched that with another NCAA Regionals berth, two team tournament titles, seven top-five finishes, a No. 41 ranking in Golfstat and No. 43 in Golfweek.
Â
In his eight years in Fort Collins, Newton has led the Rams to five of the top 16 national rankings in program history (current Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel has the other 11). He has also guided the team to eight team tournament titles over the past five seasons, including two during the 2018-19 campaign. His team also recorded a school-record 24 eagles in 2015-16 while his Ram squads have posted five of the top 15 season birdie totals in school history. He also coached Jake Staiano, who was the first All-Mountain West selection during his tenure as well as an individual qualifier for the 2017 NCAA Austin Regional, and Oscar Teiffel, who was the 2019 Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year and All-Mountain West selection.
