Rams to Compete in Three Meets for Indoor Season

FORT COLLINS – Delayed and shortened is the 2021 indoor track and field season but competition nonetheless is the attitude around the program with a schedule now in hand, announced Thursday by head coach Brian Bedard.

The indoor season usually stretches from December of the previous year to the end of February, but the Rams will begin this 2021 season in late January due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The schedule features three meets with the last one being a championship of sorts en lieu of not having a Mountain West Indoor Championships.

"I'm excited to get some sort of a season going and get competition other than ourselves," Bedard said. "Certainly, the student-athletes think the same way as they are chomping at the bit. Just practicing day-after-day for a while has required a lot of headstrong and patience out of this group. Because of that there is excitement brewing. They know it will not look like a normal meet with COVID-19 guidelines and no spectators, but they are getting used to adapting. I have been thrilled with the positive attitude and no complaining through all of this [season postponement]. They are appreciative to be able to practice and now compete, so I know they are really looking forward to it."

Action for the Rams commences at the annual three-day Air Force Invitational inside the Cadet Field House from Jan. 21-23. Ten teams have tentatively indicated their intent to participate including BYU, Cal, Colorado, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Stephen F Austin, UNLV, Wyoming, and a few DII teams.

Next, Colorado State will tangle with border rival Wyoming in a two-day dual meet inside the War Memorial Fieldhouse, starting Feb. 5th. The last time the Rams went up to Laramie was the Wyoming Power Meet, which featured a few other institutions, in December of 2016 and CSU only participated in throwing events. You must go back to Jan. 18, 2014 for the last time Colorado State and Wyoming squared off exclusively and that was not even in Fort Collins or Laramie, but rather Gillette, Wyo. inside a then brand-new facility in the Campbell County Recreation Center. The CSU men took the win at 66-55, while the Cowgirls forced the split with a 76-33 win.

Due to no conference meet, the Rams will conclude their schedule back at the Cadet Field House for the Championships at the Peak event, occurring Feb. 25-27th. The top teams within the region are expected to compete in what would be the last chance to get a qualifying mark for entrance into the NCAA Indoor Championships held in Fayetteville, Ark. from March 11-13th.
