Rams Drop Conference Dual to Air Force

Mundy notches first collegiate victory in 200 free
AIR FORCE ACADEMY -- Â Colorado State was able to close the gap from the first meeting, but not able to make up the entire difference in dropping a Mountain West swimming and diving dual to Air Force on Saturday, 164-131.

The two teams met the first meet of the season as part of a double-dual, with the Falcons winning that showdown 177-123.

"Obviously we'd prefer to come out with the win. I'm happy with the way they closed out the meet, specifically with the IM and the 200 free relay," coach Christopher Woodard said. "We knew we were down quite a bit, but like anything else, we don't want to go out with a whimper, we want to go out with a bang. They made a statement the last two events."

Woodard felt the team continued strong second halves of races in the meet, which also produced some time drops for the Rams. While most of the Rams were in competition suits, the Air Force team donned tech suits, which Woodard took into consideration in the results.

The Rams picked up five events wins Saturday at the Academy, including the first collegiate victory of Sarah Mundy's career when the sophomore won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:53.89, coming back later to place third in the 50 free. Liza Lunina won the 200 backstroke (2:04.63)) for the second week in a row, and Katelyn Bartley followed up her 200 individual medley win from a week ago by posting a 2:09.42 to lead a 1-2-3 finish with teammates Kate Meunier (who was also second in the 200 breaststroke) and Jennae Frederick.

Abbey Owenby's performance to win the 500 freestyle was impressive, shaving 5 seconds off her time from a week prior to cut to 5:11.06. She finished second in the 1,000 free, with teammate Madison Hunter placing third in both distance freestyles. The team closed out the day with a second consecutive victory in the 200 freestyle relay, shaving down to a 1:36.64.

"I think Abbey was really encouraged by the 1,000, even though she didn't pull out the win," Woodard said. "It was a signification drop from where she was at Air Force six weeks ago, so I think at that point, she was like, why don't I go for it in the 500 and take the field out. It was encouraging. That's the thing, is getting to convince them. We talk about race strategy and pacing and how it's really important, but if you don't take a race out, you're going to be tired no matter what. We've been talking to them about getting out faster, and a lot of them did."

Rachel Holland placed second on both the 1- and 3-meter springboards, and Kristina Friedrichs, who anchored the winning relay team, was second in both the 50 and 100 frees. Anika Johnson, Elsa Litteken and Hannah Sykes all had top-three finishes in races.

Colorado State will train for the next two weeks before closing the regular season with their lone home dual of the season on Feb. 5 against Northern Colorado (5 p.m. start) at Moby Pool. It will be a swimming-only affair, as the Rams' divers will be back at the Academy for the Air Force Diving Invitational Feb. 4-6).

The volume and intensity of training will pick up this week, but Woodard also alerted his team they need discipline in nutrition, hydration and sleep schedules and recovery.
