Rams quad playing well at Mountain Regional

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The second day was much like the first for Colorado State, which was a good thing.

Very good. After winning four of six matches to open the ITA Mountain Regionals on Wednesday, the Rams' women's tennis team followed up with two more impressive victories in the doubles draw, and a handful more in singles.

The pairings of Sarka Richterova and Somer Dalla-Bona and Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic both moved into the round of 16 after posting a win on each of the first two days, as did Matea Mihaljevic in Flight 2 of singles play. Both CSU doubles teams advanced Thursday with identical 8-7 (4) victories. Richterova and Dalla-Bona took down Joana Baptista and Holly Stewart of Boise State, while Buzkova and Mihaljevic beat Madeline Lamoreaux and Katya Hersh from Utah.

"It was great to see Sarka and Somer get another win under their belt as a new team," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "They had a slow start against a tough team, but came up big when they needed to. Radka and Matea took care of business again. It was great to see them advance to the next round."

Mihaljevec reached the round of 16 in her flight with a trio of wins the past two days. She started her run when she beat Weber State's Megan Lobardi on Wednesday, then came back Thursday with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Wyoming's Lucia Malinak, followed by a straight-set win over Utah's Sam Horwood, 7-5, 6-4.

Buzkova, playing in Flight 1 of singles, won her first match over Utah's Madison Tattini, 6-2, 6-2, then came back Thursday with a victory over Grace Haugen of Montana, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, before dropping a 6-1, 6-4 decision to overall No. 1 seed Gina Dittmann of Northern Arizona in the round of 16.

"Matea won two tough matches today," Tran said. "She is improving every day and starting to feel confident about her game. I'm proud of how she competed and found ways to win. Radka also battled in her first match in three sets. She's been a beat out there. I think today, her opponent was the better player, but we're hopeful for a rematch in the future."

Richterova and Dalla-Bona both dropped Flight 1 matches in singles on the opening day.

Friday's play features two rounds of doubles, with the quarterfinals set to follow later in the day. Singles will play the round of 16, with consolation matches in both singles and doubles at the back end of play.
