Tran to take a back seat as teammates battle for championship
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – A week ago, Mai-Ly Tran made a choice. This being the ITA Mountain Regionals, she won't get to avoid a matchup of teammates.
Â
Colorado State's women's tennis coach will have to let teammates square off in a final, because this time it's for an automatic berth at the ITA National Tournament as the pairings of Sarka Richterova and Somer Dalla-Bona, as well as Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic both advanced with semifinal victories Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.
Â
"It's a great day to be a Ram. I'm so happy that both teams reached the final, and I can't wait to see each other play tomorrow. The last two months we have been pushing the limits to be able to produce the results we did today."
Â
At the Beach Tennis Tournament last weekend, both Buzkova and Richterova reached the singles final in the main draw, but instead of them playing against each other in a smaller field, Tran had them each face different opponents from Long Beach State. Sunday, they will be across the net from each other with another teammate to help.
Â
Sunday's match begins at 10 a.m. (MT). By virtue of being finalists, both tandems earned an automatic berth to the ITA National Fall Championships, held Nov. 4-7 in San Diego.
Â
On Friday, it was Buzkova and Mihaljevic who did the heavy lifting, beating two seeded teams to reach the semis. Saturday, the script flipped, with Richterova and Dalla-Bona taking out the top-seeded team from Denver, Britt Pursell and Camille Anderson, 7-6, 6-1. Buzkova and Mihaljevic also won in straight sets, beating Ana Morett Salas and Patty Kuo of Weber State, 6-3, 6-4.
Â
As a coach, she's always pulling for her team, but this matchup makes it a bit more challenging.
Â
"Tomorrow, I will be taking a step back and letting them play," she said. "It's important to allow players to adapt in these high-pressured moments and see how they perform. It's all preparation for when it really matters in the spring."
