FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State freshman safety Jack Howell was named to the watch list for the Shaun Alexander Award, presented annually to the most outstanding freshman in college football, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Tuesday.

A true freshman with deep Colorado State roots, Howell has appeared in eight of nine games this season for the Rams with four starts. His 43 total tackles are fifth-most on the team to go along with an interception, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble.

Howell is the only player from the Mountain West to appear on the award's 37-member watch list. He was named the Mountain West's freshman of the week following a nine-tackle performance in a dominant victory at Toledo.

According to Pro Football Focus, Howell is the highest graded true freshman defender in the Mountain West among those who have taken over 150 snaps on the season, and he is the second-highest grade true freshman defensive back in the nation among those who have taken over 200 snaps.

10 Semifinalists for the Shaun Alexander Award will be announced December 2, 2021, while three finalists for the award will be unveiled December 21, 2021. The winner of the 2021 Shaun Alexander Award will be announced on Monday January 10, 2022. The formal presentations of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 11, 2022.
