CSU Rallies Late For 66-63 Win Over Mississippi State at Naismth Hall of Fame Classic

Trailing by as many as 11 during the game, the Rams used a late 17-2 run and held on in the closing minutes to improve to 10-0 on the year.

FORT WORTH, Texas – For the third time this season, Colorado State rallied from a double-digit deficit and pulled out the win, this time 66-63 over Mississippi State in the opener of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Classic Saturday afternoon in Fort Worth. With the thrilling victory, the Rams continued their season-opening win streak and improved to 10-0 (one of seven undefeated teams nationally), while the Bulldogs slipped to 6-3 overall.
 
The Rams trailed by as many as 11 in the first half and took a brief lead late before going into the halftime break down 29-27. Colorado State started the second half on a 6-2 surge to take a 33-31 lead less than two minutes in, but MSU went on a 10-0 run to go up 42-33 with 15:09 to play. The Bulldogs stayed in front for the next 10 minutes, including being up 57-49 with 6:16 remaining. From there, CSU went on 17-2 run, going back in front for good with 3:57 to go on a layup by junior David Roddy, making it 60-59. Back-to-back triples from junior Isaiah Stevens and senior Kendle Moore gave the Rams their biggest lead of the game at 66-59 and the team held on late with several key stops and rebounds to earn the win.
 
For the game, Colorado State shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the floor, including 42.3 percent (11-of-26) on threes. Mississippi State was 33.9 percent (21-of-62) overall and 25.0 percent (7-of-28) beyond the arc. The Bulldogs had a slight advantage on the glass, 34-33.
 
CSU was led by Roddy with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Moore finished with 13 points and Stevens had eight points and 10 assists. Junior Dischon Thomas was strong on the glass for the Rams, grabbing 10 boards in the contest. MSU had four players in double digits, led by Garrison Brooks with 15.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
• Colorado State's defense clamped down in the second half, limiting Mississippi State to just 10-of-35 (28.6 percent) from the floor and 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) on threes.
 
NOTES
• CSU is now 2-0 all-time against Mississippi State and 11-8 overall and 4-1 at neutral sites against current Southeastern Conference teams.
• This was the third time this season the Rams have come from behind by more than 10 points to earn a win.
• Roddy became the 31st Ram ever to reach the 1,000-point mark in his career, and is currently 29th at 1015 career points.
• This was the 54th time Roddy has scored in double figures (CSU is 42-12 in those games), while it was the 36th 5+ assist game for Stevens (CSU is 30-6 in those contests).
• This was the sixth time in the last eight games that CSU has held the opponent to 63 points or less.

• In an interesting twist, Colorado State will return to Fort Worth, Texas and Dickies Arena to take on Tulsa as part of the Hoop Hype XL | College Basketball Showcase , Sat., Dec. 18 at 2:30 p.m. MT. as the first of a doubleheader day of basketball with Oklahoma State and Houston to follow.
