CSU Falls In Mountain West Semifinals to Utah State, 62-50

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – In a defensive battle throughout, No. 3 seed Colorado State could not find the baskets and fell to No. 2 seed Utah State, 62-50, in the semifinals of the Air Force Reserve Mountain West Championship Friday night. The Rams fell to 18-6 on the year, while the Aggies improved to 20-7 on the season.

This was a challenge for both teams to score throughout the entire game, as neither team was able to shoot better than 37 for the game. The Rams started out 2-of-12 from the field but hung in with solid defense. CSU went 6-of-8 for the next stretch and took their first lead of the game at 21-19 with just over seven minutes to go in the first half. The teams continued to fight, with Utah State leading 32-28 at the intermission.

The Aggies opened up the second half on a 10-4 run to build a 10-point lead less than five minutes into the final half. CSU cut it to seven on two occasions, but a 9-0 run over 1:23 gave the No. 2 seed their largest lead of the game at 53-37 with 11:09 remaining. The Rams hung in with strong defense, including holding Utah State without a field goal for more than six minutes, but could get no closer than seven with 4:01 left.

For the game, CSU finished at 25.4 percent (17-of-67) from the field and 15.8 percent (3-of-19) beyond the three-point line. USU was just 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the floor, including 28.0 percent (7-of-25) on threes. Utah State won the battle of the boards, 50-43, and outscored the Rams 18-9 on second-chance points.

Guard Isaiah Stevens finished with 15 points, while forward David Roddy was the other Ram in double figures with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Utah State had three in double figures, led by Neemias Queta with 18 points, 14 rebounds and nine blocks.
