Sunday Awards Follow Completion of NCAA Championships

NEW ORLEANS – A second-place finish comes with USTFCCCA First Team honors for Eric Hamer and his 5,000-meter Friday performance at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, announced on Sunday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Hamer, of Monument, Colo., now is a three-time USTFCCCA All-American, having earned two indoor track distinctions and a cross country nod. The first indoor award came last season despite the NCAA's cancellation, while he obtained the cross country award in 2018 after finishing 18th at the national meet.

Since the USTFCCCA started the first and second team distinction in 2011, the Rams have collected eight first-team nods, which are for performers in the top-eight of their event. Hamer represents the first 5,000m first-team honoree and third CSU All-American in the 5000, joining Grant Fischer (2017, 18) and Jerrell Mock (2016, 17) – all teammates at one point under head distance coach Art Siemers. Coach Siemers joined the Rams in 2012 and has accumulated nine All-American indoor awards across five students-athletes in the mile, 3000 and 5000.

Hamer crossed the finish line at 13:29.60 – clearing his previous school mark by 8.33 seconds. The time went down as the fifth-best in the NCAA this season and the 11th-best all-time in the NCAA Championships. In the CSU record book, he now sits about 15 seconds ahead of Fischer and Mock who are also the only other Rams to ever compete in the race on the national stage.

Missing on Hamer's resume is an outdoor accolade, which he is anxious to pursue. He enters the outdoor season ranked eighth on the school list in the 5,000 and sixth in the 10,000.

"We have to find a good 10K to get him in to start the outdoor," Siemers said. "I really want him to go for the school record in the 10K, which is one of our best school records when talking about distance races. I know he is aiming for it. One of the things he told me right after his race on Friday was, I can't wait to race in the 10K."
