Rams Get Chance to Showcase Talent in National Meet

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Instead of the Sunday noon church bell you may have heard the jubilant screams from the Colorado State women's cross country team when they heard their school get called on NCAA's selection stream for the 2020-21 NCAA Cross Country Championships.

"We are thrilled to represent CSU at the National Championships," an equally as ecstatic head cross country coach Art Siemers said. "Only 31 teams qualify for the national meet, which is about nine percent of all division one, so this is a huge accomplishment for our women. I could not be prouder of the work ethic, unity and leadership of our ladies."

This past Friday, the women finished third in a stacked Mountain West Championships, finishing behind No. 3-ranked New Mexico and No. 10 Boise State. After getting projected fourth in the MW preseason poll, the women exceeded expectations and now have another race on the schedule.

It marks the 10th time in program history that the entire women's team will race in the national meet. The last time CSU got the invite was in 2007 when the Rams finished 15th – their second-best placing behind 1997's 12th place showing.

Usually in a normal season, the Rams would be headed to regionals prior to the national meet, but that has been bypassed due to the shortened season, because of COVID-19. This made the selection committee's task of picking 31 teams even more meticulous. Colorado State competed just three times, but in all performances, they did not place behind a team that was ranked worse than a then No. 16 Northern Arizona who are now inside the top-10. Better yet all the teams, the Rams will see again in eight days as they all heard their names get called too.

Oklahoma State University will host the championships, at the OSU Cross Country Course located in Stillwater, Oklahoma on March 15. The women's race will begin at 10:50 a.m. Mountain Time.

NCAA cross country fans will have the opportunity to watch live coverage of the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on ESPNU or the ESPN App. Live coverage of the NCAA Championships will be available starting at 10:30 a.m. Mountain time.
