Two Rams Named All-Mountain West Highlighted by Hofschild’s Honor

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – McKenna Hofschild and Lore Devos were named to the All-Mountain West team, while Hofschild earned the Newcomer of the Year award, announced Sunday by the conference.

Hofschild, a sophomore from Prior Lake, Minn., transferred to Colorado State after spending her first season at Seton Hall. The 5-foot-5 point guard has proceeded to average 14.5 points and 5.4 assists per game in conference play, helping the Rams go 11-5 and earn the No. 3 seed to the MW Tournament. She spent the most time on the court this season in those games, starting all 16 and shooting 41.1% from the floor including a 39.7% clip from 3-point land.

The emergence of Hofschild in the green and gold was apparent from the tip as she notched 10 assists in the season opener, but she continued to up her game against tougher opponents in the Mountain West. The Fresno State series was her first MW matchup and she put up 13 points, five assists and two steals in the opener and followed it up with seven dishes in game two. In the next series, she elevated her then career-high points to 19, while also scoring 18 in game two and having seven assists in each of the contests within the San Diego State sweep. The upward trend continued with a MW Player of the Week performance at UNLV, eclipsing the 20-point barrier twice including a career-best six 3s and 24 points in game two. It is easier to count how many games she did not score in double digits, which is three, so she scored at least 10 points in 13 conference games.

Scoring is not the everything for Hofschild or even her main contribution that has turned the Rams from finishing 10th last season in the conference to the third seed in a one-year turnaround. Her 5.4 assists per game leads the MW to go along with her 87 total assists versus just MW opponents. On the season, she has 112 total dimes which given a full slate of games would have been a shoo-in to break into the school's all-time top-10 list. She needs 20 assists to tie the No. 10 mark.

The newcomer of the year honor is the second time it has been awarded to a Ram as Hofschild joins Ashley Augspurger who picked up the nod in 1999-00. Hofschild also was selected on the 10-team all-conference team with Devos.

For Devos, a senior from Kortrijk, Belgium, it is her first All-Mountain West accolade. The 6-foot-1 guard was Colorado State's second leading scorer and rebounder in the 16 conference games this season at 12.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

From the floor, Devos shoots 41.7%, including 42.5% from 3, which is an aspect she has added this season with 17 treys – seven more than her career total coming into the season. Her versatility shows with her 22 assists, 18 steals and a team-high 18 blocks, representing the only Ram in double digits across the three categories. She has 11 double-digit scoring games including four double-doubles. Three of those double-doubles came in one week in mid-December and resulted in being named MW Player of the Week. Just prior to that, she poured in a career-best 25 points in game one against the Aztecs along with 11 rebounds.

The two all-conference players are the most CSU has had since the 2016-17 season's recipients Elin Gustavsson and Ellen Nystrom.
