Rams In A Tie For Eighth After First Round of Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Colorado State had early issues but rallied on the back nine and finished the day in a tie for eighth after the first round in the tightly-contested Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by University of San Diego and San Diego State University, is being played at San Diego Country Club (Par 72 – 7,033 yards) in Chula Vista, Calif.

The Rams came out and were unable to put many birdies together on the front nine, making the turn among the eventual counters at 3-over. However, CSU was able to pull it back with nine birdies to six bogeys and finish at 1-over 289 in a tie with No. 26 Kansas and No. 22 New Mexico. The top 10 teams are separated by just six shots after 18 holes, as co-host San Diego is in the lead at 5-under 283, two shots ahead of Southern Cal in second at 3-under 285. Nevada is third at 2-under 286 followed by Colorado and UCLA in a tie for fourth at 1-under 287.

Davis Bryant is the opening round leader for CSU after a 2-under 70, with Parathakorn Suyasri one shot back at 1-under 71 after the junior closed with three birdies on the last five holes. Freshman Gunnar Broin posted a 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for 33rd after his first collegiate round, while fellow freshman Rasmus Hjelm had a 3-over 75 in his initial action, currently tied for 59th. AJ Ott is currently at 4-over 76 in a tie for 65th.

CSU will tee off the second round at 8 a.m. PT off Hole 10, playing again with San Diego State, Southern Cal and Washington.
