Becky Hammon One of Eight Recipients of NCAA Legacy Award

INDIANAPOLIS – Continuing to set an example and continuing to get rewarded for it, Becky Hammon's latest accolade comes from the NCAA as she was named one of eight 2021 Legacy Award recipients, announced Thursday by the organization.

The purpose of the award, which is given to local individuals at both the NCAA Women's and Men's Final Fours each year, is to celebrate their community outreach, local activism and commitment to inclusive excellence. The awards program, which began in 2014, puts a spotlight on the career accomplishments and civic involvement of former student-athletes, coaches, administrators and community leaders.

Past recipients have been trailblazers, pioneers, activists or key contributors, many of whom have been the first of their race or gender to accomplish significant achievements related to athletics and higher education. For Hammon it is easy to see what event sparked her prerequisite for this honor. On December 30th, she became the first female to head coach a regular season NBA game. Although brief as it was only for the ejected Gregg Popovich, it symbolized another step for Hammon and for women.

This year's awards were presented virtually due to ongoing health concerns around COVID-19.
