SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – On a very challenging course against a top-flight field, Colorado State is ninth after the first round of the 74th Annual Western Intercollegiate Presented by Topgolf Monday. The three-day, 54-hole event, hosted by San Jose State University and televised nationally on the Golf Channel, is being played at Pasatiempo Golf Club (Par 70 – 6,615 yards) in Santa Cruz, Calif.

In this historic tournament that is a unique play-six, count-five event, the Rams posted a 16-over 366 in the opening round. No team finished the first 18 holes under-par, with the top squad being No. 43 Washington at even-par 350, three shots ahead of California in second at 3-over-353. No. 7 Pepperdine is third at 4-over 354. Stanford is in fourth at 8-over 358, while San Jose State and BYU are tied for fifth at 11-over 361.

Jack Ainscough is the top Ram at 1-over 71 in a tie for 18th. AJ Ott is one shot back at 2-over 72 and tied for 28th, while Davis Bryant is tied for 41st at 3-over 73. Rasmus Hjelm is at 4-over 74 and tied for 52nd, while Gunnar Broin and Parathakorn Suyasri complete the team at 6-over 76 (tied for 65th) and 8-over 76 (tied for 76th), respectively. Cal's Finigan Tilly and Justin Ngan of Hawai'I are the opening round co-leaders at 3-under 67, one shot ahead of a trio of golfers as just 11 of the 90 individuals finished the day under par.

CSU will return to the course tomorrow for the second round starting at 1:42 pm MT and will be part of the televised slot of 5-8 p.m. MT.
