Sportswomen of Colorado Tabs Becky Hammon with Trailblazer Award

Becky Hammon Collects her Eighth Award from Sportswomen of Colorado
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – More recognition follows for Becky Hammon and her continued path she blazes for women in basketball and overall women advancement with the latest honor being named exactly that – Sportswomen of Colorado's Trailblazer Award for 2020.
The Colorado-based organization has annually been celebrating athletes for 47 years either within the state or connected to the state from the high school level all the way up to the professional ranks. This award marks the eighth Hammon has received including her induction into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. The Sportswomen of Colorado annual award ceremony was postponed to this year due to COVID-19 and was moved to a virtual celebration for all 2019 and 2020 winners. The Sportswomen of Colorado 46th & 47th Awards Celebration will be honored Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. MT. and have a combined 76 honorees between the two years.
The Trailblazer Award comes after she became the first female to head coach a regular-season NBA game after Gregg Popovich was ejected in a Spurs-Lakers game on Dec. 30, 2020. Although brief, the moment rippled through the sports world and outside of it, garnering praise from Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
While at CSU, Hammon received the College Basketball Award from Sportswomen of Colorado three times (1998-2000) and was named Sportswoman of the Year (1999). Since taking a clipboard with the Spurs, she has received the Dorothy Mauk Award twice (2015, 2019), which was named after a pioneering Colorado sportswriter.
Becky Hammon was a part of the winningest four-year stretch in Colorado State women's basketball from 1995-99 and the program's only consensus All-American. She was inducted into the Colorado State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004. After a 16-year WNBA career, she was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame (2015), New York Liberty Ring of Honor (2015) and the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame (2018). Immediately after hanging her career up, she transitioned right into the San Antonio Spurs coaching staff in 2014 and has been there ever since. The latest "first" is one of many that she has had with the Spurs. In 2015, she was the first-ever female to head coach in NBA's summer League and win it. A year later, she became the first-ever female coach to be a part of an All-Star coaching staff.
