Throwers Highlight Day Two of Rock Chalk Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Wind did not take the sails out of the Rams in the regular season finale Saturday at the Rock Chalk Classic.

It hampered times being official for NCAA and record book's sake in terms of the sprints and hurdles, but head coach Brian Bedard still praised the competition of the Rams. In the events that weren't affected – mostly the throws – CSU put in a strong day's work.

Four top-20 marks were obtained in the women's throws, including Gabi McDonald's 53'8.5'' shot put that goes down as the fourth-best throw in school history. She already had the second-best throw in the Mountain West this season behind Tarynn Sieg, but it further strengthens her position going into the conference meet in two weekends. Maria Muzzio finished right behind McDonald in fifth place for a throw of 52'8.25'' also a PR that is seventh all-time. Five of the Rams in the women's discus either notched PRs or season-bests.

In the 400m, Lauren Gale crossed first at 53.84 for her third win of the season in the event. Janyah Jasper and Briyana Bunson finished third and eighth in the 100m with times that would be PRs if it wasn't for the strong wind reading.

On the men's side, Allam Bushara and Isa Bynum went 1-2 in the triple jump with the latter measuring a season-best, making that 2-for-2 on the weekend as Bynum did so in the long jump Friday too. In the sprints, DeVon Washington finished third in the 400m. Four of the six Rams in the men's discus also notched either PRs or season-bests.

The Rams will take a week off before traveling to Clovis, Calif. for the Mountain West Outdoor Championships, starting May 13th.

Coach's Corner
Head Coach Brian Bedard
On the meet…
"When it [wind] gets to that point, we just look how they compete and place, so I think we still had some good performances. When you are still beating people then it is hard to be disappointed in the outcome when everyone is dealing with the elements. The student-athletes certainly liked the meet in addition to the coaches as it was a challenge for us. Every event was close and lived up to the billing. Outside of the wind, we had some great weather. It was a great opportunity to come out and play at this top-notch facility and face some different competition. I think we took advantage of that and the Rams did well overall, which paired well with the long-distance contingent that performed amazing at the West Coast Relays."

On finalizing the conference roster…
"We'll have to reevaluate with injuries, but it'll be tough, which is what you want. If it is not like that then you are not coaching right and don't have enough competition within the squad. If it's easy then we have too many holes."
