Adam Dawson and Eric Hamer End Campaign with Second Team All-America Nods
EUGENE, Ore. – Making it 3-for-3 in All-American performances thus far for the Rams, Eric Hamer and Adam Dawson delivered in their respective events Friday evening at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Â
For Hamer, it is 2-for-2. He pairs Wednesday's First-Team All-America nod in the 10,000-meter race with a 14th-place showing, garnering a second team award in the 5,000m plus the school record. The graduate student crossed the finish line with a time of 13:31.27, beating his previous personal record by almost 15 seconds and going from fourth all-time at CSU to the top spot. Hamer, of Monument, Colo., passed Mike Klass, and former teammates Jefferson Abbey and Cole Rockhold (13:35.26), unseating the latter in the record book.
Â
Dawson, a sophomore from Parker, Colo., placed 12th with a throw of 56.06m/183'11'' in the discus throw, missing out on the finals by three spots and it was close. It took three last round throws in flight two to edge him out. The finish earned him Second Team All-America honors, which now gives him two in as many years. In 2019, Dawson finished 17th to grab the honorable mention title.

On the race…
"And that's the chapter at Colorado State. Not to cut myself short, but that was one of the most competitive fields assembled in the 5K. I felt very honored to toe that line. When the race when out very aggressive, I strategically positioned myself in the back. I knew we were going to go fast and I knew there would be some wipeouts and there was. If the 10K felt like a piece of classical music, the 5K was more a scratched record. I think on a standalone 5K meet, I could have done better in the top-8 range but I'm still grateful for the opportunity. I love competing with other people, but today I was competing against myself. I knew the school record was attainable and I just wanted to run happy. I am walking away with another All-America honor and that record, so I am honored to go out in a high note. I'm honored for the support staff and coaches that have aided me in my career."
Â
Junior Adam Dawson
On his performance…
"I am happy with my marks. I have been really consistent since coming back from injury earlier in the season. Being able to be here is always fun and a great way to end a season. I was stressed looking at the leaderboard during the second flight wondering where I was positioned, and it donned on me that I was in position to advance. I wasn't prepared for it, but I was happy. Obviously, it didn't happen, but its encouraging to be in the mix. I still have time left here at Colorado State, so I'll be aiming at First Team All-American next year. That's all that's left since I already got the other two."

On Dawson…
"Adam put himself in a position to reach finals and was competitive at the meet when just a few months ago we didn't know if he would be throwing this season. That shows how special his commitment was to getting back to a high level. He trusted the process and did the course. It is one thing to know the plan and another to complete it, which he did by making it to this stage. It was a struggle at times early on, but we just kept chipping away at it. He's a grinder and he believed. I thought his first throw today was great to start off, but then I think he pressed a little bit instead of being relaxed in those following throws, but nonetheless I am very proud of his season and his performance today."

Distance coach Art Siemers
On Hamer…
"We knew it was going to be a really fast race, because of the strong field. His plan was to hang onto the pack as long as he could and then chase a few folks down. He knew he had a good shot at the school record and he wanted to add to his legacy here at Colorado State, so I know that was a big deal for him. Obviously, he's not racing for times at the national meet, but it was just a caveat. I think it was special for him. He doubled at conference, regionals and now here, which is an incredibly taxing feat. I'm sure his legs were tired here today, but he ran with a lot of guts."
