Graduate Student Receives All-America Honorable Mention Honor

EUGENE, Ore. – With the privilege as the last Ram in action – across all Colorado State athletics – for the 2020-21 calendar season, Maria Muzzio picked up All-America honorable mention honors in the discus throw Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Muzzio, of Fairfax, Va., finished 23rd with a throw of 51.61m/169'4''. She concludes her career with a personal record of 56.13m/184'2'', which is eighth in CSU history. That mark was obtained just a month ago to capture the Mountain West title in the event, which was her second to go along with the 2018 title she got in her freshman campaign. To grab that second trophy, the graduate student utilized her extra year per COVID-19 this season.

Every step of the way in her career, Muzzio progressed. At the NCAA Regional stage, Muzzio has improved in all three career discus appearances from 32nd (2018; 49.48m/162'4'') to 26th (2019; 50.64m/166'2'') and most recently to 10th (55.39m/181'9''), which qualified for her first NCAA Championships appearance. That throw also marked her second-best throw in her career, meaning two of her last three appearances were her best showings as a Ram. This season specifically, she placed first three other times besides the conference meet with top spots at the CU Invitational and both home meets – Doug Max Invite and Jack Christiansen Invite.

For the discus on the women's side, Muzzio makes nine different women that have qualified at NCAAs and the 14th All-America honor.

The Rams completed action with four total All-American honors. On Wednesday, Eric Hamer finished fifth in the 10,000m to pick up a First-Team nod and then on Thursday he added a Second-Team accolade in the 5K. Also on Friday, Adam Dawson, a sophomore from Parker, Colo., placed 12th with a discus throw of 56.06m/183'11'' to earn Second Team All-America honors.

Student-Athlete's Perspective
Graduate Maria Muzzio
On the meet…
"The stadium is so cool out here. It is a much bigger atmosphere with a lot of fans and energy, which is awesome to experience. Obviously, I did not do as well as I wanted to or how I expected, but I am still here and am blessed to have had the season that I did. I obtained a few PRs and am just happy that I made it this far to end my career at the highest stage in college. I had my family here to experience this with me. They always try to make it to a meet if they can, so it was really awesome to have them at this one. It was especially neat for my dad to be here as he competed at Hayward Field when he competed for George Mason as a decathlete. My whole family though here as my support system was special."

On Muzzio…
"It was obviously not the result that Maria wanted, and she isn't happy with it, but that is what you like to see in a competitor and that is the competitiveness she has displayed throughout her time as a Ram. The performance does not take away from her great season that included a Mountain West title and her advancement through NCAA Regionals to get here to the NCAA Championships for the first time. Furthermore, she improved every season and I'm glad she came back for this extra season and ended it inside this environment with her family in the stands. She's a fantastic individual and I've enjoyed coaching her every step of the way."

On the end of the season…
"It has been an unprecedented year for collegiate athletics with the complexities that COVID-19 presented. Our staff and student-athletes displayed a lot of patience and resilience to maneuver through the struggle and come out successful. They did a great job of not letting it control them into making excuses. The men won conference, the women were a close runner-up both teams qualified several student-athletes to NCAA Regionals. Three student-athletes made it to the big stage here in Eugene and showcased the grit that got them here. I could not be more proud of the effort this season from the whole program and look forward to the 2021-22 campaign."
