Broin Advances To Match Play at U.S. Amateur

Rising sophomore went birdie-eagle on his final two holes today to make the 64-player bracket
OAKMONT, Pa. – Colorado State rising sophomore Gunnar Broin (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka HS) has advanced out of stroke play to the match play portion of the 121st U.S. Amateur, being played at Oakmont Country Club and Longue Vue Club in Pennsylvania. Broin is one of 64 players out of the 312 entrants to move on to the next stage.

Broin played Oakmont on the opening day and fired a 1-over 71 on the more challenging course, one of the top-10 scores on the historic course on the first day. A rain delay cut off his second round at Longue Vue on Tuesday, forcing a morning completion on Wednesday. Broin was at 3-over for the day and 4-over overall, below the cutline, heading into his final two holes, but made two stellar shots for birdie and eagle to move back to 1-over, well clear of the cutline as he finished in a tie for 37th. The cutline was at 3-over, with a 12-for-1 playoff for the final spot in the bracket.

All the remaining rounds will be played Oakmont, which has been host to numerous major championships, with the most recent the 2016 U.S. Open won by Dustin Johnson.
