Howell is only the second defensive back to earn Freshman All-American honors in program history.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – For just the second time in program history, a defensive back has earned Freshman All-American honors as Colorado State's Jack Howell picked up the recognition from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) on Monday.
Â
After not appearing in the opener, Howell was a regular in the defensive rotation, appearing in 10 games and starting six. He finished fifth on the team with 64 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss. He intercepted one pass and was credited with four pass breakups as he closed the regular season as Pro Football Focus' highest-graded true freshman safety.
Â
He is the third Ram to be named to the FWAA's freshman team since the award began in 2001 and second since 2019 when teammate Dante Wright was named to the team. Howell also joins Erik Olson (1996) as the only two freshman Ram defensive backs to earn All-American honors. Olson was named to Sports Illustrated's freshman-only team that season.
