Colorado State Control Fresno State in Second Half for 78-67 Win

FRESNO, Calif. – A dominant second half fuels the Rams to a 78-67 win over Fresno State Monday evening at Save Mart Arena to end a three-game road trip on a high note.

After a one-point margin at the half, Colorado State came out firing in the third quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 29-19 and obtaining the game's first double-digit lead. Seventeen of Upe Atosu's 22 total points came in the frame on 5-of-6 shooting including four 3s. The last trey sent CSU into the final quarter with an 11-point lead. Helping secure the win in the fourth was McKenna Hofschild's eight points paired with Karly Murphy's five points and four rebounds. The Bulldogs did connect on a 3-ball in the first possession, but Atosu's fifth three of the game occurred at 7:53 and the score never dipped back under double figures.

Colorado State improved to 13-5 overall and returned to .500 at 4-4 in Mountain West play. The Bulldogs who were voted to finish first in the conference dropped to 7-11 overall with a 3-4 conference mark. Hofschild finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with five assists. Hofschild and Atosu became the first duo to score 20+ points since Ellen Nystrom and Elin Gustavsson in 2017. Murphy nabbed her 10th career double-double and sixth of the season with 15 points and 12 boards.

"This is an obviously really big win for us coming off that tough loss at Boise," head coach Ryun Williams said. "Our student-athletes put together a tremendously gutsy effort to conclude this road trip. The funny thing is you would think there would be a big locker room celebration, but they just collapsed. They clapped a bit, but then you could see that they left everything on that floor. This was going to take a whole team effort and they delivered. The second half was certainly key, but we also started off this game with the right mentality. McKenna came out on a mission and ended it the same way with composure and clutch free throws."

The Rams shot 50.8% from the field for just the third time over the .500 mark. CSU edged Fresno in all three shooting percentages (3FG%, FG% and FT%). To conclude the third quarter, CSU hit its last 10 field goals and then opened the fourth making its first three. The only other stat category that jumps out in favor of CSU was the rebounding battle in which the Rams won 38 to 31.

Upon returning home, the Rams will host Nevada Thursday with a 6 p.m. MT tip inside Moby Arena.
