Rams post 18 scoring efforts on final day

FRESNO, Calif. – The opening weekend was a way to get back into the flow, post some foundational times to build off of and see where the team was sitting.

Doesn't hurt to grab a title along the way, either.

Colorado State freshman Alexis Trietley, coming off a fifth-place finish Friday in the 50-yard freestyle at the Chick-fil-A Invitational hosted by Fresno State, came back stronger on Saturday, winning the 100 free in Saturday's final session, posting a time of 50.17. In her debut as a Ram, she swam legs on four placing relays and sat just outside of gaining points in her third individual event.

"Lexi is just a pure racer. She loves to compete, but most impressive is her ability to sustain a great turnover rate in her races," CSU coach Christopher Woodard said. "She can crank her arms real quick."

Trietley was one of three Rams to place in the race on a day when the team put up five top-five finishes and had a pair of relays place in the top six. In total, CSU had 14 scoring swims in individual races on the season's opening weekend.

The final session featured some of the Rams' best events, and they took advantage in the 1,650 free, 200 back and 200 fly.

"I think today is indicative of our ability in distance, sprint free and endurance stroke events – all pointing towards the potential for a great last day at the Mountain West Championships," Woodard said. "We still need to boost our overall endurance and be even more discipline on our walls."

Sophomores Maya White and Emily Chorpening paced the team in the longest event of the day, the 1,650 free, finishing third and fourth, respectively (17:29.52, 17:39.41). Another big push came in the 200 butterfly with four scorers, with Lucy Matheson (2:03.43) and Amanda Hoffman (2:03.53) went 4-5, as Erin Dawson followed in 10th (2:07.91) and Kendra Preski 16th (2:10.64).

The Rams had three scorers in each the 100 free and 200 back and two in the 200 breast. Anika Johnson (12th, 52.50) and Megan Hager (13th, 52.62) finished top 16 in the 100 free; Matheson was 9th in the 200 back at 2:03.93, with Dawson 14th (2:06.29) and Liza Lunina 16th (2:06.94); and Katie McClelland was ninth in the 200 breast at 2:21.24, followed by Emma Breslin (10th, 2:21.96).

In the diving well, Jessica Albanna placed eighth on the 1-meter (220.00) and 14th on the 3-meter (209.15).

The Rams placed sixth in both the 400 medley and 400 free relays, with Trietley anchoring both units. The medley team, with Lunina, McClelland and Matheson, posted a time of 3:49.57, while the free team, with Hager, Azalea Shepherd and Johnson, went 3:30.10.

Colorado State finished in sixth place with 379 points. UCLA won the meet with 962.83, followed by San Diego State (794.33) and Cal (628.5).

The Rams return to the lanes next Saturday with a double dual at Colorado School of Mines, with New Mexico State also in attendance. The meet, in Golden, begins at 11 a.m.
