Rams post four victories as the Colorado Cup continues
DENVER, Colo. – A chilly and hectic day waited Colorado State's women's tennis team on Saturday at the Denver Tennis Park, but the Rams did their best to persevere in taking on host Denver.
Â
"We had new doubles pairings today and they did a great job of executing our style without many reps," CSU head coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "Zara Lennon and Vika Zhadzinskaya had great energy and were very aggressive. I'm happy to see how they all played."
Â
The doubles play was tight on the day, but Zhadzinskaya and Lennon snuck away with a win. The pair defeated Denver's Anastasia Simonov and Louise Wikander in the tiebreak game, with the score of 7-6 (0). Emily Dush and Ky Ecton fell to DU's Caroline Driscoll and Claudia Martinez de Velasco 6-3, while Radka Buzkova and Luana Avelar lost to Andrea Burguete Beltran and Britt Pursell by the same score.
Â
"Radka, Emily and Luana played very well today and didn't give many opportunities to their opponents," Tran said. "We had our chances in all our matches, but we need to work on being stable and able to work through some of the tougher moments."
Â
In the singles play Emily Dush and Buzkova soared. Dush swept DU's Pursell 6-3, 6-2 and Buzkova did the same to Driscoll with the scores of 6-2, 6-1. Sarah Weekley put up a fight against Burguete Beltran but fell short, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Sarka Richterova also had one heck of a draw but lost in the third set to Martinez de Velasco 0-6, 6-1, 10-3. Wikander defeated Lennon 6-3, 6-1 and Zhadzinskaya lost to Simonov 7-5, 7-5.
Â
"This group has a lot of potential and we've been excited to see their growth every day," Tran said.
Â
With Air Force being short players, the Rams picked up a few side matches with Colorado in front of their matchup Sunday to close the Colorado Cup, with Luana Avelar beating Anya Nelson 7-5, 6-2 in singles, while Richterova and Weekley dropped a doubles match with Nelson and Ellen Puzak, 7-6 (4).
